Working memory

Julian Hilton

pp. 181-189

Abstrakt

This chapter discusses the difference between human memory and computer memory, and the effects of this difference. There is a tendency to confuse memory capacity — dramatically expanded in computer technology — with understanding and competence. The latter qualities of the human working memory are connected with forgetfulness and fantasy — two qualities that are often seen as disturbing and potential causes of unreliability. But should they not be seen instead as positive properties of the human active memory?
