Embodied time

the narrative refiguration of aging

Michael Coors

pp. 129-141

Abstrakt

Since antiquity, various texts have considered the experiences of human aging and living in old age. However, most of these texts are not systematic reflections. Therefore, this paper explores systematically how to understand aging as a temporal phenomenon of embodied human life. It does so by referring to the philosophical tradition of phenomenology (Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Waldenfels) and to the theory of narrative time (Paul Ricœur). This way aging is conceptualized as the experience of embodied time which is refigured by narrative schemas of aging.
